Our values

We believe that we should always align our actions towards a common purpose; that trust is paramount and must be cultivated; that the most valuable team members multiply rather than add; and that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously, except when we’re writing long run-on sentences about our values. We believe that assembling and retaining an inclusive and diverse team is the best way to grow a successful company.

Sales Engineer - Austin

At LightStep, our mission is to deliver confidence at scale for those who develop, operate, and rely upon today’s powerful software applications. We created LightStep because we understand the massive architectural transformation underway in the software industry, and we saw an opportunity to accelerate it, all while improving the quality of the developer and end-user experience. While we learned a great deal from our experiences building Dapper (Google’s distributed tracing solution) and Monarch (Google’s high-availability metrics solution), LightStep is in many ways a reaction to and a generational improvement beyond those approaches. Our story as individuals and as a company revolves around continuous learning, careful listening, and the belief that these fundamentally new software architectures require fundamentally new solutions.

At LightStep, each Sales Engineer plays an essential role in ensuring the success of our customers and the growth of our business. We believe that the path to success for a customer begins in the sales process, when they are still a prospect exploring LightStep as a potential fit for their needs, challenges, and aspirations. Thus, our sales process is extremely consultative and the Sales Engineer works alongside our Account Executives to serve as a trusted advisor for each prospect. The Sales Engineer listens to each prospect, empathizes with their technical and operational pain points, understands how those relate to the prospect’s strategic business goals, and ultimately scopes a solution and partnership that allows us to drive success for the prospect as a new LightStep customer.

You’d be a great fit if…

  • You enjoy constantly challenging and expanding your technical knowledge.
  • You are intrigued by the marriage of technology and business and enjoy engaging on both fronts to craft the perfect balance between the two.
  • You display trustworthiness and build credibility quickly via empathy, clear communication, and a deep understanding of people, technology, and business.
  • You would enjoy interfacing with our prospects including Software Developers, DevOps teams, and Site Reliability Engineers while serving as their advocate and champion within LightStep.
  • You are a self-starter who flourishes in a team environment and enjoys building new processes, tools, solutions, businesses alongside other talented entrepreneurs.

Bonus points if…

  • You have a background in Application Performance Management (APM) or system architecture analytics.
  • You are familiar with any of the following: microservices, distributed tracing, proxies / service meshes (Envoy, HAProxy, Linkerd), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), containers (Kubernetes, Docker).
  • You know or are proficient in any of the following languages: Go, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, or NodeJS.

Engineering Manager

As we add new capabilities and scale out our technology, Lightstep is looking to grow our creative, curious, low-ego engineering team! You’ll be joining us in San Francisco and working on a sophisticated distributed system that collects, manages, analyses, and presents high-fidelity data from our customers’ applications.

You’d be a great fit if…

  • You've managed a growing engineering team (for example, guiding project management and career development).
  • You're motivated by the success of your team and are excited to support the engineers on your team.
  • You have a track record of delivering great software on a predictable schedule.
  • You’re motivated by both open-ended challenges and practical it-just-needs-to-get-done projects: whatever has the most impact.
  • You’re eager to learn from your team and peers, and you have something to teach them as well.

Bonus points if…

  • You've recruited and shepherded engineering candidates through the interview process.
  • You’ve worked on (or have a lot of curiosity about) large-scale distributed systems and microservice-based architectures.
  • You’ve got a background in (or have a lot of curiosity about) large-scale system performance or security.
  • You have experience outside of engineering: marketing, sales, design, etc.

Go To Market Recruiter

Recruiting is arguably one of the most important things Lightstep needs to accomplish. The Go to Market Recruiter will play a critical role in helping drive this activity for the entire company. Our GTM Recruiter will be responsible for sourcing and owning the relationship with each candidate from first outreach all the way to close and the new employees first day. This role will largely support our Sales, Marketing and Customer Success orgs.

You’d be a great fit if…

  • You have experience managing the entire candidate's life cycle
  • You have experience building out remote teams
  • You draw energy from building strong relationships with candidates and enjoying interacting with them in a educational, social, and business level
  • You thrive in a fast paced environment
  • You have an inherent drive to constantly learn and challenge yourself to reach your own personal and professional goals
  • You enjoy developing innovative and engaging candidate sourcing strategies for recruiting the best talent for each role.

Bonus points if…

  • You have worked in an agency at some point in your career
  • You have deep knowledge of recruiting tools and opinions on how they should work
  • You have a passion for technology and/or direct experience in the APM space
