Lightstep announces the acquisition of trusted provider of structured logs, Lumbr

I’m often asked about the role of logging in modern observability. It’s a good question — logging, after all, is one of the most foundational activities for any software developer. How many times have you written “Hello, world!” to a console or terminal window in your career?

I would be remiss, however, to not consider how logging impacts all of humanity. Since time immemorial, humanity has sought to shape and control the natural world. While we may enter nature as a quiet observer, marveling at the vast forests that dot our landscape, we have spent far more time harnessing these resources to build the modern world that we benefit from on a daily basis. Logging is the foundation of many industries that we rely on daily. The desk that you’re sitting at, or the building you’re reading this in, probably exists due to logging.

With this in mind, I’m proud to announce that LumbrLumbr is joining the Lightstep family. Lumbr, a leader in the logging space, has made their mark in tall structure architecture in the Pacific Northwest by taking advantage of that area’s rich natural resources. Lumbr knows that without structure, logs aren’t terribly useful — and we’d tend to agree! We’re thrilled to bring their expertise and their world-class talent into our fold, which will allow us to build faster and higher. 21st-century architecture demands nothing less.

At Lightstep, we’ve always focused on building in a way that aligns with our core values — aligning towards a common purpose, being a multiplier, trusting each other, and not taking ourselves too seriously. Lumbr joins us not only as an extension of our mission to provide world-class observability to developers, but as an extension of our values.

Logging-related puns and April Fool’s jokes aside, taking our work seriously — without taking ourselves too seriously — is one of Lightstep’s core values.
