Today, we’re announcing the general availability of Change Intelligence in-context. But… what do we mean by “in-context”? Back in June, when we officially launched Lightstep NotebooksLightstep Notebooks, we made several references to it.
To understand changes in service health quickly and – most importantly – what caused those changes, you need to see how parts of the systems correlate and relate to each other. With this visibility, you can analyze events in-context which reduces mean time to resolution (MTTR) and drives proactive performance improvements.
When investigating a change, Lightstep’s Change IntelligenceChange Intelligence suggests powerful trace-based throughput correlations across your system to help you move your investigation forward if you get stuck. With Change Intelligence, any developer, operator, or SRE - regardless of their expertise - can determine how the system works.
First, let’s look at the mental effort of context switching. According to the American Psychological AssociationAmerican Psychological Association, 40% of productivity is lost through context switching. For Lightstep users, while navigating from your Notebook to Change Intelligence provides additional diagnostic insights, it requires switching from the screen you were looking at. While this change in scenery may take seconds to complete, it may derail your investigation and increase the amount of time to resolve an issue if your hypothesis was incorrect
With this release, when you’re in the middle of your investigation, and you see a spike or deviation in your chart, you can simply click the “Analyze Deviation” button to trigger a new view of Change Intelligence without leaving the page. This simple pop-out will save you time troubleshooting, and will also help stave off the mental effort associated with context switching.
Accessing deep insights into your system is now only a click away regardless of where you are in the product - dashboards, Notebooks, or alerts.
From this view, you are now able to refine the deviation to analyze and trigger Change Intelligence. You can also bypass this step by clicking the deviation directly in your chart and selecting “Analyze Deviation.”
With two clicks, Change Intelligence provides a list of attributes with the most change, sorted by the percent change from the baseline. Instantly, you or your team can identify a particular customer, service, or attribute that is likely causing the deviation in your chart. Since you can quickly refine your query without leaving the same view, you save time and reduce both costs and mean time to resolution.
Lightweight v Heavyweight Analysis
Lightstep Notebooks makes it easy to continue investigating without losing the context of previous investigative pathways. And, if you choose to add the chart from the attribute panel to your Notebook to maintain a record of your investigation, or modify your original query, Lightstep has you covered.
If you need to perform some quick lightweight analysis of a spike on a chart, or heavyweight analysis to determine the true root cause of an issue, Lightstep’s Change Intelligence can help refine your investigation, saving you valuable time and resources. You can see a list of correlated changes in your system, filter those changes, refine your query, or access the standard investigation flow in the full Change Intelligence experience for additional diagnostic information.
Transforming the Troubleshooting Journey
The ability to see change in-context of your system is critical to solving issues quickly before they become major problems for your customers and your business.
Whether you’re investigating a spike on a dashboard, an alert that triggered, or analyzing your system with Lightstep Notebooks, teams can quickly resolve incidents, collaborate more effectively, and quickly document learnings via Notebooks to share across the organization. All with the goal of transforming the troubleshooting journey.
If you aren’t a Lightstep user yet, take it for a spin by requesting a free trialfree trial or try it out in our sandboxsandbox.
